In the text Taking Sides, Clashing Views in Mass Media and Society, one of the many questions explored by this volume is: Do video games encourage violent behavior? The article that answers "no" to this issue appeared in the August 6, 2005 edition of the magazine The Economist. In this article, the author gives a comprehensive background to video games, as well as the issues involved and the common perception that in the popular media that video games do have negative effects of players in terms of increased aggression. However, then, the author of the "no" position, drawing extensively on the work of Steven Johnson, makes a persuasive argument that, in the case, the popular media is wrong. Michel Foucault discusses modernity along two threaded lines.
