“Working Class Majority” and “Nickel and Dimed”
[ send me this paper ]
A comparison of the content and message contained in these books by Michael Zweig and Barbara Ehrenreich. Each of these authors targets the latter half of the 1990s to present an expose of a societal situation which they find unacceptable. Both are concerned with the definition of class in America and the societal factors which interact to define the respective classes. While Zweig approaches the problems of class in America from a statistical perspective Ehrenreich takes a slightly different approach, shedding her identity as an award-winning journalist and infiltrating blue collar America as an unskilled worker. "12 Angry Men" - Group/Team Dynamics
[ send me this paper ]
7 pages in length. The premise of 12 Angry Men shows how human (mis)perception, ego, prejudice and close-mindedness holds a wide variance of potential harm. Brought together to deliberate the fate of an accused murderer, the jury learns a lot about their own shortcomings - and eventual enlightenment - throughout the process of reaching a verdict. The 1957 film was instrumental in demonstrating how a group of opinionated, angry men who refuse to believe there is any other viewpoint but their own can be damaging to a just outcome; only when they are guided by the collective components of group dynamics do they finally realize the danger of assuming everything is as it seems at face value and why analyzing situations beyond the obvious facts carries a tremendous weight in reaching the right conclusion. Bibliography lists 2 sources.

"Busywork" vs Management in Good as Gold
[ send me this paper ]
A 5 page paper discussing Joseph Heller's Bruce Gold in terms of inadvertent management practice. Bruce Gold served on a committee that met only twice and conducted no business. Bruce was charged with writing a report on the committee's activities, which he did not do as there were no activities to report. Nonetheless, everyone heartily congratulated Bruce on his excellent and incisive work. In this one instance, Bruce encountered many of the difficulties in business today: lack of direction; ineffective communication; and crushing preoccupation with producing documents whether or not they contain any information of value. "Getting to Yes: Negotiating Agreement Without Giving In": A Review
[ send me this paper ]
5 pages in length. All of us at one time or another have experienced those difficult moments when we want to speak up for our rights but are faced with an adversary, be it family member, friend, or employer, who is simply a stronger personality type than ourself. In these cases we inevitably lose our case, and go slinking away without having said what we thought, much less having a chance at getting what we truly want. The good news is that now there is help for those who can't seem to get what they want. Getting to Yes : Negotiating Agreement Without Giving in is a great resource for learning how to negotiate with anyone and everyone in a firm but amicable manner, stating facts and walking away with both parties satisfied. Bibliography lists 3 sources.
